Addie Lucille Glover Ketner

Addie Lucille Glover Ketner, was born on Dec. 9, 1910, in Rowan County to Mary Augusta (Mollie) Bernhardt Glover and James Monroe Glover. Her husband of 77 years, Glenn E. Ketner, preceded her in death in 2007. After a full and happy life, she died peacefully at her home on Aug. 10, 2015, at age 104. Addie was a loving and generous mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and she valued her family above all else. She took special pride in the educational achievements of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed providing them with challenges and opportunities. “Mimi” was a wonderful inspiration to them all. Addie is survived by her daughter, Carolyn K. Penny and husband Wade H. Penny Jr., of Durham; and son Glenn E. Ketner Jr., and his wife, Susan H. Ketner, of Salisbury. Also surviving are grandchildren Dr. Wade. H. Penny III, of Chattanooga, Tenn., David M. Penny and wife Cristy of Boise, Idaho, Carolyn Leigh Penny and husband Greg of Davis, Calif., Dr. Michael G. Penny and wife Marcia of Virginia Beach, Va., Glenn E. Ketner III and wife Katherine and John Christian Ketner and wife Alexandra, all of Charlotte. Ten great-grandchildren will also cherish her memory. Addie was a member of the first graduating class at Boyden High School in 1927. She married Glenn E. Ketner on July 12, 1930, and together they established Ketners Super Markets, a chain of modern retail grocery stores in Salisbury and surrounding towns, as well as Excel Grocery Company, a supporting wholesale business. Addie was a homemaker while her children were small and a volunteer with the PTA, Scouts, Red Cross and many other organizations including St. John's Lutheran Church. On Jan. 2, 1927, she attended the dedication of St. John's at 200 West Innes Street in Salisbury, where she has been an active member for more than 80 years. She held a variety of leadership positions at St. John's and was among the first women elected to serve on the Church Council. Addie was a charter member of the Amicitia Book Club and was, for many years, a volunteer with the Rowan Hospital Auxiliary where she completed two terms as President. She was also an active member of the Elizabeth Maxwell Steele Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution where she served as Regent. She developed a consuming interest in family genealogy and was instrumental in the research, writing and publication of The Bernhardt Family, a definitive work on the John Crawford Bernhardt family. John Crawford Bernhardt's great-grandfather, John Christian Bernhardt I, emigrated from St. Johann, Germany, to Philadelphia, Pa., in 1749. He subsequently moved his family to Piedmont North Carolina. Addie and her late husband, Glenn, were very much involved in their community, and in 1956 they established the Glenn E. and Addie G. Ketner Family Foundation to benefit regional and local educational, health and cultural organizations. Additionally, they endowed a nursing professorship at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory and funded the Center for International Studies at Catawba College in Salisbury. The family extends its special thanks to Dr. Myron Goodman and Dr. Chet Amin and to Addie's in-home caregivers: Nancy Taylor, Tina Goodman, Rebecca Fortner, Charlene Whitley, Jessica Shafer, Angie Holt, Lisa Durette, Betty Bell, Joan Hardin, Candy Hilton, Chelsea Ritchie, and Connie Stegall. A special thank you is also extended to Ellen Webb who helped Addie and Glenn for almost 18 years before her retirement in 2014. The unselfish service and devotion of these friends have been invaluable. Reunion News 2015

I'm looking forward to seeing all our family members next weekend, Aug 1 and 2. Here are just a few last minute notes.
On Saturday, Aug 1, the George Michael branch is host and we'll meet at Bonnie's house for games, food, and socializing.
Bonnie says to "come any time after 4p and we'll eat at 6p. Come, stay, relax, and enjoy."

We'll have hamburgers, and hot dogs, and fixings, so Bonnie needs a head count.

Bernhardt Reunion 2015

The first Sunday of August is fast approaching and that means it’s Bernhardt Reunion time!  It will be good to see family members and catch up on everyone’s news.  Bring your covered dish goodies for the luncheon, beginning at 12:30 pm, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church fellowship hall.  If you are planning on attending church at St. Paul’s, our worship begins at 10:30 am. Hope to see you there.

Many of the emails on our list are returning so we need your help.  Please pass the word and let’s make an effort to have a good showing this year. We need to maintain and strengthen our family connections.
For the 2015 reunion, since it is a year with either a “0” or “5”, a Saturday event will be planned in addition to the Sunday luncheon. Bonnie Bernhardt graciously offered her house for a get-together on Saturday afternoon. I'm going to talk to Bonnie and get some details for us. 

For 2015 the host family will be George Michael on Saturday at Bonnie's house.

The Ira Leo family will host the event on the next day (Sunday) with our lunch and meeting. 

The Jacob Alphonso / Joseph Clarence families are responsible for the event program on Sunday.

I am the President this year and Karen McConnell was suppose to be the VP so Frank Miller is helping me organize. Stan Sebastian is sec and Mike Bernhardt is treas.

Karen Miller McConnell

Karen Miller McConnell went home to her Heavenly Father on March 19, 2015. Born in Salisbury on April 13, 1950, to Robert and Ruth Miller, she graduated from Boyden High School and went on to get a degree from Kings College in Charlotte NC.  Karen had a great passion for history, which led her into a career that included a position as Docent at Hezekiah Alexander Historic Home Site and later at Rosedale Historic Plantation, where she was Curator of Education until retirement.  She held leadership positions in various historic associations, was very active in the life and ministry of St Paul’s Lutheran church, and volunteered in the community.  She was a loving wife, mother and Mamaw.  Karen co-authored one book and was doing research on another historical reference. Inspired by events which occurred at the family home place, which she and her husband restored, she was writing a novel based upon the events. She enjoyed reading, photography, researching genealogy, shag dancing, antiquing, church music programs, crafts, and her cats.  

Karen is preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Bernhardt Miller.  She is survived by her father, Robert Miller, her husband, Stan, sons, Chad (Terri), Jeromy (Nicole), grandchildren, Maddy, Ella, Porter and Sawyer, her sister, Elizabeth Miller (Rick), brother, Frank Miller (Judy), and many other beloved family and friends. 

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for all the love and support shown Karen and the family during her illness.

Roy P. Bernhardt

SALISBURY - Roy Peeler Bernhardt, age 89, of Salisbury, died Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte. 

Roy was born April 17, 1925, in Rowan County, a son of the late Ira Leo and Maggie Elizabeth Parks Bernhardt. 
A 1942 graduate of Granite Quarry High School, he was a longtime area resident and very active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where he served on the Church Council and the Cemetery Committee. 

Roy served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard PC 550 and LST 659 in the European and Pacific Theaters. He was a brick mason for D.C. Linn, Plant Manager of Concrete Supply Company. In 1960 he founded Bernhardt Trucking Company, Inc. and was also a farmer.

Roy enjoy hunting and surf fishing and the Atlanta Braves. He also enjoyed helping his neighbors and loved to attend all the sporting events that the grandchildren participated in.

In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ruth Beaver Bernhardt, in 1998; a son, Allen Eugene Bernhardt, in 1961; four brothers; and a sister.

He is survived by his sons, Benjamin Leo Bernhardt (Susan) of Salisbury and Randy Lynn Bernhardt (Deborah) of Claremont; his four grandchildren, Jason Bernhardt (fiancee Amanda), Lisa Cerda (Mat), Brett Bernhardt (Erika) and Kerri Wimberly (Manning); his four great-grandchildren, Beckett Bernhardt and Amaya, Tristan and Ethan Cerda.

Arrangements: The family will receive friends Saturday, Aug. 2 from 1-2:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. His funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. conducted by Rev. William Ketchie. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites.

Charles Daid Bernhardt (1949 - 2013)

Charles David Bernhardt, son or Charles Edward and Gladys Boggs Bernhardt died October 29, 2013 after a 13 year battle with progressive MS.

Greetings, to all Bernhardt Family members;

Our annual Bernhardt Family Reunion at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, is only one week away, August 4. Hope everyone will try and be there! If anyone is coming to worship, it begins at 10:30 am and the reunion will follow, with the covered dish meal at 12:30pm.

Following is a list of the other activities planned;

(1) Saturday August 3; The Jacob Alphonso family has shelter #10 at Dan Nicholas Park ( on Bringle Ferry Road) reserved for Saturday afternoon. (Directions to shelter : as you enter the park, take 1^st right (in front of volley ball courts) like you are driving towards putt putt golf and the shelter is 2^nd paved left with parking lot behind

Stan Sebastian will be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs starting around 4. Plan to come early and enjoy the park. Activities available: putt-putt, nature trails, live reptile and animals on display, petting zoo, paddle boats, miniature train for kids, volley ball.  It is great for young and not so young!  This is an excellent opportunity to visit and interact with family we don’t often see. (2) Sunday; The George Michael and Mary Augusta families have an activity planned for after the reunion; Barbara Deese is planning something that will be at the church and will include a trip to the cemetery!  I think we will be learning about family history. Sounds very interesting.

Ira Leo is the host family this year; duties include; set up tables, receive food and arrange food tables, provide beverages (tea), handle sign-in and name tags, clean up

Greetings, all Bernhardt Family members;

 August 4, 2013 will be here soon.  That is the date for our Bernhardt Family Reunion at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Salisbury, N.C.  I hope everyone is well and look forward to seeing everyone there. Stan Sebastian has sent us information on the Saturday outing and I’m forwarding that to all.  Looks like a great activity!  Thanks Stan and family.

The Jacob Alphonso family is responsible for the Saturday Activity and thus I have reserved shelter #10 at Dan Nicholas park for Saturday afternoon, August 3.  As you enter the park, take 1st right (in front of volley ball courts) like you are diving toward the golf course and shelter is 2nd paved left with parking lot behind.

I'm going to grill some hamburgers and hot dogs starting around 4.  Knowing that attendance may be scant, I'll cook for whoever comes and will have some of my family there no matter what.  Can always save what we don't eat for Sunday.

 Thought it would be fun for kids.  Putt-putt, nature trails, live reptile collection, petting zoo, paddle boats, miniature train, volley ball.  Every so often some people fly radio control planes in the field at the entrance.

Vincent Bernard Thomas

December 12, 1939 – December 10, 2012

Dr. Vincent Bernard Thomas, 72, of Wilson passed away Monday, December 10, 2012 at his home in Wilson, NC. Born in

Wilson on December 12, 1939, to Albert S. Thomas, Sr. and Lena Farris Thomas, he was preceded in death by his parents

and a sister, Carolyn Thomas Marley.

Vincent is survived by his wife, Kitty Bernhardt Thomas; daughter, Catherine Thomas Andrews and husband, Graham; son,

Charles A. Thomas and wife, Julieanne; grandchildren, Charles and James Thomas, all of Wilson. Survivors also include

brothers Allen G. Thomas, Sr. and wife, Lynette and Albert S. Thomas, Jr., and wife, Georgia of Wilson; sister, Mary

Thomas Williams and husband, Reynolds of Florence, South Carolina; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Vincent was a graduate of Charles L. Coon High School in Wilson, where he was president of the student body and an

outstanding athlete, being named all-state quarterback. College in the southeast recruited him for both football and

basketball. He later graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill and the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia. Vincent

began practicing optometry in Wilson in 1968 and was the founding member of Wilson Eye Associates. Recognized as a

leader in the optometry field, he served as a Trustee of the N.C. State Optometric Society and a member of the N.C. Board

of Examiners in Optometry. Vincent participated in many civic and community efforts and was awarded the Distinguished

Service Award by the Wilson Jaycees. For his service in furthering eye care in the state of North Carolina he holds the

Order of the Longleaf Pine, which is the highest civilian award given to a state resident. As a lifelong member of St.

Therese Catholic Church, he served as chairman of the Parish Advisory Council and member of the Knights of Columbus.

Vincent deeply cared for his many patients and was always willing to help no matter when they called. He was a kind and

gentle man whose sense of humor was infectious. Vincent loved his family, trips to Wrightsville Beach, and watching his

children and grandchildren play ball.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 1108 Windermere Drive, Wilson, NC 27896

and the American Cancer Society, 1207 Peachtree Road, Wilson, NC 27896 or to the charity of one’s choice.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road

Parkway. A Memorial mass will be held at St. Therese Catholic Church, 700 Nash Street W., Wilson, at 11 a.m. on

Wednesday, December 12, 2012. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.

Bernice Hoffman 1926 - 2012

Bernice J. Hoffman

SALISBURY - Bernice Julian Hoffman, passed away on Dec. 2, 2012, after a

period of declining health.

She was born on Oct. 7, 1926, in Rowan County to the late Floyd Julian and

Fannie Bernhardt Julian. She attended schools at Faith and Granite Quarry and

graduated from Granite Quarry High School.

Bernice led a life of service to her family, church and various businesses and

other organizations throughout Rowan County and North Carolina. She was active as a District

Officer in the North Carolina Lutheran Church Women and the North Carolina PTA where she

served as a state officer.

In addition, she worked at the North Carolina Synod Office of the Lutheran Church as secretary

to the North Carolina Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

She served Rowan Manufacturing Company as a clerical assistant, as a bookkeeper at the

Salisbury Post and Rowan County Deputy Register of Deeds, and as Administrative Secretary at

Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Salisbury.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, David Dewey, Aspyn Carter, Jacob Knight,

Hoffman, on Sept. 10, 2000; and son David Wayne Hoffman on July 11, 2003. A brother,

Howard Julian, and two sisters, Edith Morgan and Nell Williams, also preceded her in death.

Those left to cherish her memory are daughters Judy Hoffman and Martha Jones (Freddie); and

son John Hoffman (Vivian). Also surviving are grandchildren Lana Carter (Chris), Laura Vogel

(Timothy), Jessica Mahaley (Ryan), Matthew Hoffman, Kara Thurston (Aaron) and Michael

Hoffman; and great-grandchildren Shayla Carter, Lexi Carter

Alyssa Hoffman, Cheraney Hoffman, Griffin Vogel and Riley Vogel; sister-in-law Bettye Julian;

as well as many nieces and nephews.

Visitation and Service: The family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 5 from 1-3 p.m. in the

fellowship hall of Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church with services to follow at 3 p.m. Burial

will follow the service at the church cemetery. At other times the family will be at the home of

daughter, Judy Hoffman.

Memorials: May be made to Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church, 355 E. Ridge Road, Salisbury,

Harold Loyd Kluttz, Sr. (1927 - 2012)

Mr. Harold Lloyd Kluttz, Sr., age 84, of Jefferson, NC passed away Saturday night, August 4, 2012 at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem, NC.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 9, 2012 at 2:00pm at Boone Family Funeral Home with Rev. Rob Brooks and Rev. Brandon Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens and services will conclude with a gathering of family and friends at Ashe Shrine Club, 117 Morphew Lane, Jefferson.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 8, 2012 from 6-8pm at Boone Family Funeral Home.

Mr. Kluttz was born in Rowan County on September 2, 1927 to the late Roy Kluttz, Sr. and Hazel Glover Kluttz. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, attended Catawba College and worked for Armour Foods Company in Charlotte, NC for forty-three years. After retiring as plant manager and relocating to Jefferson, he opened Ashe Athletics Sporting Goods store in downtown West Jefferson. He was an active member of Ashe County Shrine Club, the Masonic Lodge, Oasis Shrine Temple as an Ambassador, the Royal Order of Jesters, Charlotte Court 109 and the American Legion Post 275 in Lansing. He actively attended Nathan's Creek United Methodist Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents; Roy Kluttz, Sr. and Hazel Glover Kluttz; and a brother; Roy Kluttz, Jr.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and is survived by his wife of sixty years Ruth Cope Kluttz; three sons; Harold Lloyd Kluttz Jr. and wife Margie of Lincolnton, Craig Cope Kluttz and wife Susan of Gastonia/Indian Trail, and Glenn Reeves Kluttz and wife Vickie of Jefferson; one sister; Donna Jarrett and husband James of Newton; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Howard Parks Bernhardt

SALISBURY - Howard Parks Bernhardt, 93, of Salisbury, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born Sept. 14, 1918, in Rowan County, a son of the late Ira Leo and Maggie Parks Bernhardt. Mr. Bernhardt was a graduate of Granite Quarry High School and served in the U.S. Army. During his service to our country, he was a Communications Chief in Central Europe and was honorably discharged in December 1944.

After his military service, he returned to Rowan County and was a Brick Mason working for Cannon Mills. He became a Brick Superintendent in the Construction Department and retired from Cannon Mills in 1985.

An avid hunter and fisherman, Mr. Bernhardt enjoyed watching sports, especially Rowan American Legion Team and Atlanta Braves. He also enjoyed yearly family beach vacations where he spent many early mornings surf fishing.

The greatest joy of his life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also, Mr. Bernhardt was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He was a former active member of Christiana Lutheran Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Ruth Lingle Bernhardt, on Jan. 24, 2007; his daughter, Debbie Bernhardt Fisher, on June 5, 2001; an infant son; three brothers; and one sister.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Belinda Bernhardt Cozart (Johnny) of Mooresville; his son, Perry Bernhardt (Lori) of Salisbury; son-in-law Carson Fisher (Alice) of Hickory; one brother Roy Peeler Bernhardt of Salisbury; seven grandchildren Ashley Cozart Fisher (Jason), Brad Cozart (Heather), Mandy Cozart Holden, Jennifer Bernhardt Aldridge (Lee), Melissa Bernhardt, Casey Fisher (Ciji) and Lauren Fisher; and six great-grandchildren Jenna Fisher, Patrick Holden, Elleson Cozart, Sarah Lynne Fisher, Madison Holden and Elin Cozart.

Also, the family would like to thank Sandy, Paula and Cheryl for their support and care for Mr. Bernhardt over the last several weeks.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5 at Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell; 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church; and the remainder of the time, at the home of a son, Perry Bernhardt of Salisbury.

Service: 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church conducted by Rev. William Ketchie, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard and the N.C. National Guard Honor Team.

Howard Parks Bernhardt (1918 - 2012)

Howard Parks Bernhardt, son of Ira Leo and Maggie Parks Bernhardt, grandson of John Crawford Bernhardt died this morning at his home. Services will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at 2 pm on Monday, August 6. Visitation will be held from 6 - 8 pm at Powlas Funeral Home and from 1 - 2 pm at St. Paul's prior to the funeral service.

As years pass and our numbers grow, we move farther from our roots, losing contact with many family members. The reunion, that our great grandparents initiated over 50 years ago, was an attempt to strengthen family ties. We honor those intentions by working to maintain those family bonds and attending the family reunion.

Saturday Afternoon Event

(Ira Leo, Laura & Cora Lee)The weekend will start off with a trip to Gold Hill, NC where members of our family were active in the operation of one of NC’s most successful mining operations.

Our tour will include the Gold Hill Jail, Assay Office, Barnhardt and Miller Shafts (go underground only to the entrance), The Chilean Ore Mill and also see the English Dry Stacked Rock Wall constructed around 1845 that is still stands intact and creates two walls of the jail. The Jail contains additional exhibits and photos. Plus the Log Barn (donated by Paul Bernhardt from his property), Randolph Shaft site and a walk along the Old Mining Road to the Powder House and Gold Hill Pond. (Allow approx. 1 - 1/2 hours). There is a video for those who wish to remain at Mauney Store. There will be a fee for the tour of less than $8 (I’m waiting for the group rate.) Sunday Afternoon Event

(George Michael & Jacob Alphonso) After the lunch, plans are to visit Dunn’s Mountain. You can hike (walk off some of that food from lunch) or ride a bus to the top of the mountain with fantastic views of downtown Salisbury, Pilot Mountain, the Winston Salem skyline, and the Charlotte skyline (on a clear day.) Picnic tables at the top will afford a great place for ice cream and drinks as we enjoy the view. The park is free of charge. Bill C. Bernhardt (1943-2011)
(Bill was the son of William Crawford and Bertice Drake Bernhardt, grandson of Ira Leo Bernhardt.)


Bill C. Bernhardt, 68, passed away September 24, 2011 at his residence here in Panama City with his family by his side.

Bill was born in Salisbury, North Carolina to the late William C. Bernhardt and Bertice I. Drake in February of 1943.

He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 26 years, receiving many ribbons and awards for his duties, also being a Vietnam veteran, a model aircraft builder of scale models and an avid giver of blood to the American Red Cross. He moved to the Panama City area in 1988 after retiring from the United States Air Force.

Survivors include his wife of 16 years Cathy Bragg Bernhardt of Panama City, Florida; two sons Michael C. Bernhardt and his wife Mary of Panama City, Florida, Daryl R. Bernhardt and his wife Diane of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two daughters Renee Cumbie and her husband Andy, Michelle Broadway and her husband Randy of Panama City, Florida; one brother Gary Bernhardt and his wife Carol, a sister Brenda Lowder and her husband Johnny of North Carolina; eight grand children and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Bernhardt will be held at Southerland Family Funeral Home on Tuesday September 27 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Virgil Tillman officiating. Interment will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home on Monday night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Honorary Pallbearers for MSgt (ret) Bernhardt will be Robbie Roberson, Fred Padgett, Richard Bentley, Bill Blake, Dean Holliday, and Jay Goss.

In lieu of flowers the Bernhardt family request that donations be made to Covenant Hospice or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Bill's memory.

2011 Bernhardt Reunion

We had a wonderful time at the reunion this year beginning on Saturday afternoon with a trip to The North Carolina Transportation Museum.
