Bernice Hoffman 1926 - 2012
Bernice J. Hoffman
SALISBURY - Bernice Julian Hoffman, passed away on Dec. 2, 2012, after a
period of declining health.
She was born on Oct. 7, 1926, in Rowan County to the late Floyd Julian and
Fannie Bernhardt Julian. She attended schools at Faith and Granite Quarry and
graduated from Granite Quarry High School.
Bernice led a life of service to her family, church and various businesses and
other organizations throughout Rowan County and North Carolina. She was active as a District
Officer in the North Carolina Lutheran Church Women and the North Carolina PTA where she
served as a state officer.
In addition, she worked at the North Carolina Synod Office of the Lutheran Church as secretary
to the North Carolina Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
She served Rowan Manufacturing Company as a clerical assistant, as a bookkeeper at the
Salisbury Post and Rowan County Deputy Register of Deeds, and as Administrative Secretary at
Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Salisbury.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, David Dewey, Aspyn Carter, Jacob Knight,
Hoffman, on Sept. 10, 2000; and son David Wayne Hoffman on July 11, 2003. A brother,
Howard Julian, and two sisters, Edith Morgan and Nell Williams, also preceded her in death.
Those left to cherish her memory are daughters Judy Hoffman and Martha Jones (Freddie); and
son John Hoffman (Vivian). Also surviving are grandchildren Lana Carter (Chris), Laura Vogel
(Timothy), Jessica Mahaley (Ryan), Matthew Hoffman, Kara Thurston (Aaron) and Michael
Hoffman; and great-grandchildren Shayla Carter, Lexi Carter
Alyssa Hoffman, Cheraney Hoffman, Griffin Vogel and Riley Vogel; sister-in-law Bettye Julian;
as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation and Service: The family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 5 from 1-3 p.m. in the
fellowship hall of Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church with services to follow at 3 p.m. Burial
will follow the service at the church cemetery. At other times the family will be at the home of
daughter, Judy Hoffman.
Memorials: May be made to Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church, 355 E. Ridge Road, Salisbury,
