Roy P. Bernhardt

SALISBURY - Roy Peeler Bernhardt, age 89, of Salisbury, died Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte. 

Roy was born April 17, 1925, in Rowan County, a son of the late Ira Leo and Maggie Elizabeth Parks Bernhardt. 
A 1942 graduate of Granite Quarry High School, he was a longtime area resident and very active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where he served on the Church Council and the Cemetery Committee. 

Roy served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard PC 550 and LST 659 in the European and Pacific Theaters. He was a brick mason for D.C. Linn, Plant Manager of Concrete Supply Company. In 1960 he founded Bernhardt Trucking Company, Inc. and was also a farmer.

Roy enjoy hunting and surf fishing and the Atlanta Braves. He also enjoyed helping his neighbors and loved to attend all the sporting events that the grandchildren participated in.

In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ruth Beaver Bernhardt, in 1998; a son, Allen Eugene Bernhardt, in 1961; four brothers; and a sister.

He is survived by his sons, Benjamin Leo Bernhardt (Susan) of Salisbury and Randy Lynn Bernhardt (Deborah) of Claremont; his four grandchildren, Jason Bernhardt (fiancee Amanda), Lisa Cerda (Mat), Brett Bernhardt (Erika) and Kerri Wimberly (Manning); his four great-grandchildren, Beckett Bernhardt and Amaya, Tristan and Ethan Cerda.

Arrangements: The family will receive friends Saturday, Aug. 2 from 1-2:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. His funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. conducted by Rev. William Ketchie. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites.
